Blue Blossom Branch Cross Stitch Pattern

Blue Blossom Branch Cross Stitch Pattern

Fresh and cheerful, this design features a graceful branch of sky-blue flowers. Three open five-petal blossoms with sunny yellow centers spread across slender green stems, surrounded by little blue buds just about to open and soft olive-green leaves outlined in deep emerald.

The pattern uses only 6 DMC colors on a 174 × 200 stitch grid, with full cross stitches only and no blended threads. Three blues shade the petals from pale sky to electric blue, while two greens and a bright canary yellow finish the leaves and flower centers. Below you’ll find the pattern facts, materials list, color key and all four free downloads: the color chart, the black & white chart, the one-page chart and the Pattern Keeper file.

Materials & Supplies

  • This pattern download: Color Chart, Black & White Chart, One Page Chart and Pattern Keeper versions are all included
  • Aida fabric, 14 to 28 count. Recommended colors: White, Antique White, Cream, Ivory, Light Beige, Soft Yellow, Natural, or Natural Linen-Look Aida
  • DMC embroidery floss in 6 colors: 472, 813, 827, 909, 973 and 995
  • Tapestry needle, size 24–26
  • Embroidery scissors
  • Hoop, Q-snap or scroll frame (the design is almost square, so a large round hoop or square Q-snap works well)
  • Use 2 strands of thread for all cross stitching

Tips for This Pattern

Before you start stitching

  • DMC 827 (Blue, Very Light) is the largest color at 4,352 stitches, followed by DMC 813 at 3,149. Buy three skeins of 827 and two to three of 813 so every petal comes from one dye lot.
  • DMC 995 (Electric Blue, Dark) outlines every petal and bud. Stitch these outlines first on each flower, then fill the lighter blues inside; it makes counting much easier.
  • DMC 813 and 827 are close light blues. Keep them clearly labeled and check symbols under good daylight.
  • DMC 973 (Canary) is used for only 152 stitches in the flower centers, so one skein is plenty.
  • The stems are just one or two stitches wide and wander across several chart pages. Count carefully at page joins so each leaf and bud lands in the right spot.
  • With only 6 colors, this is a great pattern for parking threads: keep a few needles threaded and work block by block.

FAQ

What brand of thread does this pattern use?

This pattern is charted for DMC brand thread. All 6 colors are listed in the color key with their DMC numbers and names.

Does this pattern use any blended colors?

No. Every stitch uses a single DMC color with 2 strands, so there’s no need to combine two shades in the needle.

What fabric size should I use?

Finished size depends on the Aida count you choose. Add at least 3″ (7–8 cm) of margin on every side for framing:

Aida CountFinished Size
14 ct12.4″ × 14.3″ / 31.4 × 36.3 cm
16 ct10.9″ × 12.5″ / 27.6 × 31.8 cm
18 ct9.7″ × 11.1″ / 24.6 × 28.2 cm
20 ct8.7″ × 10.0″ / 22.1 × 25.4 cm
22 ct7.9″ × 9.1″ / 19.8 × 23.1 cm
25 ct7.0″ × 8.0″ / 17.7 × 20.3 cm
28 ct6.2″ × 7.1″ / 15.8 × 18.1 cm
Is this pattern good for a beginner?

It’s a friendly next step after a few small projects. With only 6 colors and whole stitches, the chart is easy to read; what makes it Intermediate is its size (about 13,400 stitches) and the thin stems that need careful counting.

Is this a full coverage design?

No. The background is left as bare fabric, and the flowers and leaves cover well under half of the grid, so the blue blossoms really stand out.

How long does this pattern take to complete?

Plan on roughly 35–55 hours. The small palette means few thread changes, so the large petal areas fill in quickly.

What’s the difference between the four downloads?

The Color Chart shows colored symbols across several pages, and the Black & White Chart is the printer-friendly symbol-only version. The One Page Pattern fits the whole design on a single sheet for a quick overview. The Pattern Keeper file is made for the Pattern Keeper app, so you can mark off stitches digitally on a tablet or phone.

Conclusion

This blue blossom branch brings a breath of spring to any room, and its soft blues look especially lovely in a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. With just 6 DMC colors, whole stitches only and no blends, it’s a relaxing project that still gives a polished, framed result.

Pick the chart version that suits you best, gather your blues and greens, and enjoy watching the blossoms open stitch by stitch. We’d love to see your progress if you share it!
